Christmas In The City

Three years ago, my mom and I decided to start a tradition of going to San Francisco during the holidays for some Christmas shopping.  A local elementary school charters a bus and for only $25 a person, we get transportation to SF, a light breakfast and a light meal on the way home.  This is a GREAT deal, just for the fact that we do not have to use our own gas or navigate through the busy streets.

Ready to head out to San Francisco!

If you've ever been to San Francisco, you know that it is a magical city any time of year, but during Christmas, it is definitely spectacular.

This past Saturday was our shopping day!!  We got dropped off at the Hotel St. Francis by Union Square, took some pictures by their huge, beautiful Christmas tree and headed off to Williams-Sonoma for some window shopping.  This year we spent a good hour in there.  I always feel so inspired while walking through W-S.

Loved this theme tree!

My favorite from W-S.

My mom wanted to take all this home...too bad it wouldn't fit on the bus!

Our next stop was Crate & Barrel, our FAVORITE stop of the trip.  The first year we went, we bought everything we wanted in the morning, then had to carry huge bags all over.  Last year we got smart and started going in the morning to scope out what they had, then head back later before the bus came to pick us up, to do our actual buying.

Is this the elf elevator??

Loved this dining set

We then made our way to Mo'z Cafe for some lunch.  I had looked up some places on Yelp, and once I saw the name "Mo" I knew we had to try it out.  Both my mom & I got the French Dip with a salad.  It was delicious!  We agreed that it was just enough food to fill us up, but not make us feel overstuffed.

The Westfield Mall was next, and we wandered around for about 2 hours, making only one big purchase at The Body Shop.  It's nice to just walk the mall and see all the festive decorations.

We were beginning to slow down a bit, but headed back up to Union Square to hit Macy's.  I think there's 7 or 8 stories in this Macy's...heaven!  We started on the basement level by grabbing a drink at Jamba Juice and taking a few minutes to relax off of our feet.  I got my energy back when I saw all the fun kitchen stuff!  I even bought an Herb Mill with part of a Macy's gift card I had been saving for a year or 2.  I saw the same Herb Mill at Williams-Sonoma {and got to try it there, too!} and knew I had to have it.  I can take all my fresh herbs and grind them over soups, salads, sauces, etc.  Best $20 I have spent this month!

After Macy's we headed across the street to take pictures as the sun was setting.

We noticed a gathering of people, and as we approached, we saw people holding all sorts of signs supporting whatever their cause was.  There was a lady on a makeshift stage talking about staying out of Africa, while we saw some "Occupy" signs, some for Haiti support, and this sign was our favorite {and most amusing}.

Interesting....

After that excitement, we headed to Victoria's Secret, where I used a gift card I've had for 5 years.  Can you tell I have issues with using gift cards?

It was almost time to be picked up, so we went back to the hotel.  My mom wanted to take a picture with all of our goods.  ***Please note - not ALL of these bags are mine....this warning is mostly for my husband, since I know he reads my blog.***

Every year, once the bus is loaded, we got to Treasure Island to get pictures of the City in all its lit up glory.  With having a new camera, I am still trying to get used to the settings, so I didn't get any great night time photos, but trust me, SF at night is a sight to be seen.

I was COLD!!

On the way home, we enjoyed a filling dinner and the Jim Carrey movie "Mr. Popper's Penguins."  Very cute if you have small children in your life.

And, just like THAT, our Christmas trip to San Francisco was over with.  We'd been looking forward to it since September, and I am sad that it went by so quickly.  Out of the 3 times we have done this trip, this time was the best by far and I loved getting to spend some quality time with my mom.

Slow Cooker Rotisserie Chicken

Can I just say it's really hard to concentrate on writing when I am also watching "The Daily Show."  Jon Stewart is hilarious!

This weekend, I finally decided to make one of the frozen chickens I bought from Costco awhile back.  This past summer my local Costco started selling organic chicken and the price for a whole chicken is quite reasonable.

Have I ever made a whole chicken before?  Umm...nooo.  Buuuuut, I have made a turkey {once} and cornish game hens a few times, so it's basically the same thing, right?  I also didn't have a lot of time to dedicate to cooking the chicken, so my first thought was "How can I make this in the slow cooker?"  Very easily, it turns out.  It took me about 15 minutes to prep and 8 hours to cook.

Here's what I did to prep the bird:

* Cleaned the chicken {inside and out - I felt a little weird, since I just met this chick}
* Rubbed butter all over the outside of chicken {and, once again, inside}.  I also cut little slits into the skin, so I could pat quite a little bit inside the skin.
* Seasoned the chicken with S&P, oregano, thyme and basil {to do the inside, Gary held the bird open for me}
* Stuck half of a lemon into the "cavity"

How to prep the slow cooker:

* Roll up aluminum foil into 3 balls and place them on the bottom of the slow cooker.

* Add the prepped chicken to the slow cooker, so the aluminum foil is fully supporting it.

* Cook on low for 6-8 hours.

...You're probably thinking, "Boy, that so easy and delicious.  How did it end up looking?"  Well, someone {me} was so hungry by the time the chicken was finishes that I forgot to take a picture of it.  What can I say, it was Sunday night and I was running around like a chicken with its.....oh, never mind...I just forgot!

But I can say that it was so yummy and it gave Gary & I dinner and lunch TWICE!!

A lot of my recipes are made in the slow cooker - do YOU have a favorite way to cook food or a favorite kitchen gadget??

"I Want" Wednesday

Who's excited and has 2 thumbs?!?!  THIS GIRL {as I point to myself}  Only 3 more days of work, then I head to San Francisco with my mom on Saturday for a fun filled day of shopping!!

Until then, here is some Pinterest love from the past week or so!

  • I want to cuddle with these 2 precious pups!

  • I love, love, love Modern Family!  This show is so well done, and 2 of the characters remind Gary & I sooo much of us it is not even funny...actually, it IS funny!

  • I WISH I could menu plan for the whole month, let alone, plan so creatively.

  • I would love to have the fashion sense {and the money} to dress myself in outfits like these.

That's all I have for this week!

Hoping to be back later this week and post a slow cooker rotisserie chicken recipe.  It's amazing!

A Few Of My Favorite (Holiday) Things

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Everywhere you go...

Christmas is definitely my favorite time of the year - the cheerfulness, the baked goods, the MUSIC!!  I am in my element during the holiday season and make a point to slow down during the craziness to enjoy all the great things about Christmas {if I don't, Gary makes me...one more reason he is a great husband}.

Here are a few of my favorite things during the holidays:

1. Peppermint Schnapps.  Add a tiny bit to your hot chocolate and you are guaranteed to warm up by the 3rd sip!  Who needs to use the heater when you've got Peppermint Schnapps?!

2. Grilled Cheese & Soup - Maybe this is not exclusive to Christmas, but this is a staple in our house during the holidays...it's warm, it's filling, it's quick to make.

3. SNOWMEN!!  I bought this cute snow couple for Gary & I during our first Christmas living together and we have been hooked on snowmen ever since.

4.  My "Daughter" ornament - At the time my mom gave this to me, neither of us had any idea that less than a year later Gary & I would have moved to the Central Valley, with my parents to follow us soon after, and that 2002 would be the last Christmas in my childhood home.  I always look forward to putting this ornament up every year.

 5. Miracle on 34th Street - It's ridiculous how many Christmas movies and cartoons Gary & I own, but this one has always my hands down favorite.  I am such a realist {and dare I say it, cynical} at times, that it's nice to watch movies that restore my faith in believing in things I cannot see.  "Faith is believing when common sense tells you not to."

***What are some of your favorite holiday things??***

Whole Wheat Pumpkin Scones

My favorite duo, you ask?  Hall & Oates?  Peanut Butter & Jelly?  NO!

Coffee & scones!!  Especially of the pumpkin variety!

You can see I posted a gluten free pumpkin scone recipe in October, but I love this following recipe so much.
This past weekend I made a HUGE batch of scones to freeze for breakfast/mid-morning snacks.

I've been making this recipe for 3 years now and I think I FINALLY have perfected it!

Whole Wheat Pumpkin Scones

Ingredients:
4 Cups Whole Wheat Flour
1 TB Baking Powder
1/4 Cup Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup Coconut Sugar {or cut out and replace with another 1/4 cup brown sugar}
1/2 tsp each - sea salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger
1 TB Pumpkin Pie Spice
6 TB Butter, softened
1 Cup Canned Pumpkin
1/4 Cup Milk
1 Egg, Beaten
1 tsp Vanilla

Directions:

*Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
*Mix flour, baking powder, sugar and spices until blended
*Add butter and mix until fine and crumbly
*Add pumpkin, milk, egg and vanilla and blend
*Knead on a floured surface until smooth
*Shape into a rectangle about 1/2 thick and cut into 8 squares, then cut each square diagonally, to make 16 triangles
*Place on an ungreased tray about 1 inch apart. Bake at 400 degrees for about 12-15 minutes.

Spiced Glaze:
1 Cup Powdered Sugar
2 TB milk
1 tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice

Directions:
*Add all three ingredients to a bowl
*Mix
*Drizzle over cooled scones.

These scones freeze really well!  Just layer cooled scones between wax paper and place in a plastic storage bag in the freezer.

**What baked goods do you like to snack on?
